If there is one phrase that captures Michael Montayre's spirit, it is his signature exclamation: "Yessssah!" This classic local expression radiates the pure joy Michael brings to everyone he meets.
Growing up, Michael always put others first, helping care for his younger siblings. But on May 7, 2020, his role shifted when he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke affecting his entire right side. Despite beginning his early recovery during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, his positivity never wavered. With the compassionate team at REHAB Hospital, he began the hard work of regaining his strength.
A New Chapter of Caregiving
For his sister Charity, the stroke meant stepping into a new role as his primary caregiver.
“Becoming his caregiver has been one of the greatest challenges of my life, but it has also been one of the greatest privileges,” Charity shares. “Being able to support him the way he always supported our family means everything to me.”
That fierce support system extends to Michael’s nieces and nephews, who absolutely adore him. Whether they are talking story or playing games, they treat him no differently than before, providing a vital anchor of normalcy, laughter, and unconditional love.
Finding Freedom Through Community
Beyond his family, Michael has discovered new ways to heal and connect through community programs like creative arts, and adaptive cycling and swimming. These activities have helped him build confidence and realize that recovery is about finding new purpose, not just physical healing.
