What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates which focuses on the balanced development of the body.
The six principles of Pilates are: centering, control, flow, breath, precision and concentration.
Its foundation is alignment and strengthening of the core muscles -- the deep, internal muscles of the abdomen and the back. As core strength increases, so does stability and control, allowing a body to move freely and efficiently.
REHAB at Nuuanu integrates these Pilates principles into our patient’s rehabilitation programs using classical Pilates apparatus in our custom-designed studio. Our equipment includes specifically designed pieces to meet the unique rehabilitation challenges of all of our patients from the elite athletes to those recovering from a stroke. This is what we call Clinical Pilates.
